A Rather Unusual Day

I started my day like any other,

Everything seemed as always, nothing special.

I had breakfast with my family,

Preparing myself for another day of work.

I met my long-time companions,

We had been working together for a long time.

We prepared everything we would need,

All details were perfectly adjusted.

While working, a man climbed up in a hurry,

It seemed he was fleeing from something or someone.

He only wanted to know where the ship was headed,

He had no luggage nor history, just haste.

I recognized he was truly fleeing,

But I didn't want to question, let him be.

And he really stayed very quiet, almost hidden,

He searched for a spot deep in the hold of the ship.

We set sail and the sky began to change,

What was peace was converted into fear.

A tempestuous wind struck us violently,

The black clouds brought a terrible storm.

The ship was about to shipwreck, there was no hope,

We tried everything, even threw the cargo into the sea.

We cried out to our gods to rescue us,

However, no response or help was received.

We remembered the stranger and went to call him,

He slept calmly as if nothing were happening.

The captain asked him to call upon his God,

We were appealing to all divinities.

Nothing worked, we cast lots to discover the culprit,

The lot fell upon the stranger.

We questioned who he was and what he did,

His answer left us frightened and speechless.

He was a Hebrew, servant of the God of Israel,

We were shaken upon hearing his story.

He was fleeing a mission given by God Himself,

Even not being of his faith, that seemed madness.

I had already heard stories about that God,

I heard about many miracles He did for the people.

Those were stories distant from my reality,

But now, I was witnessing one of them.

The Hebrew said we should cast him into the sea,

We hesitated because we wanted to preserve his life.

He insisted, said he was our salvation,

We asked for forgiveness for our act and did his will.

He was swept away by the current far off,

Then, there was instantaneous calm.

The storm ceased quickly and miraculously,

We realized this was a miracle of the Living God.

We offered sacrifices to the Almighty,

We recognized that He is the true Lord.

Each one committed with special vows,

We knew we had seen the power of God.

After that day, my life was never the same,

I left behind those I thought were gods.

My family and I decided to follow the Lord,

He is the only and true God we must worship.
